Scoliosis Care in Peachtree City
Understanding and Treatment
Scoliosis is characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It often starts as a postural distortion and, if left untreated, can become a permanent deformity. It’s important to note that any type of sideways curvature is abnormal; the spine should appear straight when viewed from the back. Scoliosis typically involves a primary curve in one direction and a compensatory curve in the other direction.
At Crane Chiropractic & Applied Kinesiology, we proudly welcome patients of all ages suffering from scoliosis, from children to adults, we can’t wait to help you.
Causes of Scoliosis
- Congenital: Genetic predisposition.
- Habitual: Resulting from behavioural routines.
- Idiopathic: Unknown cause.
Recognizing the Signs
Parents may notice signs such as a high shoulder or low hip, leading to poorly fitting clothing. Uneven shoe wear can also be an indicator. Children with scoliosis might experience back and leg pains, often dismissed as “growing pains.” While heavy backpacks are not a direct cause of scoliosis, it is important to ensure your child uses both shoulder straps to distribute weight evenly and that their backpack does not exceed 10-15% of their body weight.
Allowing scoliosis to progress without intervention can lead to severe cases where a child might need an unsightly or cumbersome brace or even surgery to insert steel rods to straighten the spine. Experts disagree on when scoliosis requires care. While many surgeons recommend surgery for spinal curvatures of 40 degrees or more, smaller curves (10-25 degrees) may not require immediate attention.
Chiropractic adjustments can improve the spine’s structure and function. These adjustments may also help strengthen and retrain muscles, potentially improving your child’s posture. If you suspect your child has scoliosis, we recommend an evaluation to determine how we can help.
We also find success using the Thompson Technique, Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT), and Applied Kinesiology to help rebalance the muscles on both sides of the spine.
One of our most inspiring success stories involves a young patient with a 15-degree curve in her upper thoracic spine and a 20-degree curve in her lumbar spine. Despite being initially treated with a brace, her condition worsened, with the curves increasing to almost 40 degrees. Determined to help her, we embarked on a dedicated chiropractic care plan. Over the course of just six months, we were able to reduce her spinal curves to an impressive 5-7 degrees, significantly improving her quality of life and overall well-being.
